JOE LOVANO QUARTET

Joe Lovano, saxophones. George Mraz, bass. James Weidman, piano. Jordi Rossy, drums and special guest Judi Silvano, vocals.

Joe Lovano (Cleveland, 1952), is one of the best tenor saxophonists alive today. He is a spontaneous innovator and great improvisor. In the mid-seventies, he began to perform and record with musicians such as the guitarist George Benson, and play in the orchestras of Woody Herman and Mel Lewis, and by the early eighties he had become one of the major contemporary saxophonists in appearances with Paul Motian and Carla Bley. Since his association with the guitarist John Scofield, his fame has not ceased to grow. Afterwards, he led various quartets with which he recorded outstanding tracks in the New York Village Vanguard and he formed a trio with two authentic greats: Elvin Jones and Dave Holland. With an impeccable technical mind and a fertile musical imagination, Joe Lovano is one of the most appreciated tenor saxophonists of our day. He has taken part in numerous projects, because all the best musicians want to play with him.

Baldo Martínez is one of the most charismatic Spanish musicians, he plays far from the standard American jazz and more in line with current European jazz. One of his projects, Projecto Miño, which was assigned by the International Jazz Festival of Guimaraes (Portugal), has, with its leading group, become considered one of the most interesting developments of today comparable with the quality of the best in Europe. His collaborations with other European artists include, the Portuguese singer María Joao, the Italian saxophonist Carlo Actis Dato, the French musician Valentin Clastrier, the trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and the Mallorcan pianist Agustí Fernández. He is a founding member of important groups in the history of Spanish jazz (Clunia, Zyklus ...) His concern for initiatives which contribute musical novelties has earned him the title 'the new face of jazz', and in the Spanish Jazz Guide he appears as a prominent musician within the field of experimentation and fusion music. Finally, the Projecto Miño has seen the light as a recording on an album which has received unbeatable reviews and which in 2008 was nominated for and became a finalist in the National Music Awards. The staging of the project is brilliant, for its wealth of style and variety, making all the components, under the direction of Baldo Martínez, show themselves in their best light in each performance.

DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER

Dee Dee Bridgewater, vocals. Edsel Gomez, piano. Pernell Saturnino, percussion. Thomas Bramiere, bass. Gabriel 'Mínimo' Garay, drums.

Dee Dee Bridgewater (Memphis, 1950) is one of the tangible realities of jazz vocals today. Her international recognition was assured after she received a Grammy in 1997 for best female jazz singer, a guarantee for a prolonged career in which she has collaborated with sacred jazz figures like Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon and she was a favourite pupil of Ella Fitzgerald. She has taken part in North American musicals on Broadway with Billie Holiday and in the revue musical 'Sophisticated Lady' about Duke Ellington. She has recorded numerous renowned records where one can observe the enormous influence of the style of the singers Nancy Wilson and Sarah Vaughan herself. From blues to scatt, passing through standards and live recordings, Dee Dee Bridgewater is on the way to making history in the world of jazz vocals. In her latest work 'Red Earth' (2007), she travels back to her roots and, above all, towards the blackness which stems from jazz, it is a homage to the red earth of Mali. For January 2010 she will launch the record 'To Billie with Love. In celebration of Lady Day', a homage to the great Billie Holiday.
