JOHN ZORN ACUSTIC MASADA

with special guest URI CAINE & CYRO BAPTISTA
John Zorn saxo, Dave Douglas trompeta, Greg Cohen contrabaix, Joey Baron bateria, Uri Caine piano, Cyro Baptista percussions.

John Zorn (New York, 1953), composer and saxophonist, is a wonderfully creative musician who has laid himself open to many and varied influences, all the time enjoying the underground scene and the risk that goes with it. He is one of the major performers of noise-music, a collage style which fuses free, electronic sounds, effects, distorted voices, etc. Zorn entered the world of jazz driven by his passion for contemporary music and after listening to people like John Cage and Stockhausen, etc. In his music, we also discover influences from Ennio Morricone, reminiscences from the Jewish culture and inspiration from Ornette Coleman. He has done a lot of work on soundtracks having worked on eighteen records from his 'Filmworks Series' and has been involved in numerous high-risk projects. He has made records on his own as well as many musical experiments for cartoons, television programmes, abstract sounds, chamber music and piano concerts and has developed many ideas along with various other musicians. Masada, a wide-ranging musical project, consists of two hundred themes, all of which show the spirit of revival for which Masada stands. It all began in 1994 as a music project and fortunately it continued, with a series of live recordings in different places around the world, which served to bring this prolific and chameleon-like musician into the jazz scene. John Zorn managed not only to bring together a jazz quartet of undoubtable high quality, but at the same time, he managed to give a coherent shape and feel to the music that it carried within.

NICHOLAS PAYTON TRIO

Nicholas Payton trompeta, Vicente Archer contrabaix, Kendrick Scott bateria.

Nicholas Payton was born in New Orleans (Louisiana) in 1973 into a musical family. At eleven years old he was already a professional musician with the 'All Star Brass Band'. At eighteen years of age, he formed part of Elvin Jones's band. Many specialist magazines considered him, together with the Marsalis brothers, one of the first of a new generation of musicians called 'The Young Lions'. In 1994, he formed his own group and recorded 'From this Moment'. Since then, Payton has made eight records, and he received the Grammy Prize in 1997 in collaboration with the legendary trumpeter Dock Cheatham. Throughout the years, he has also performed and produced with dozens of different musicians from the worlds of jazz, R&B and Hip-hop and his name appears in more than a hundred recordings, either as composer, special guest or sideman. 'Into the Blue' (2007) is his most recent record and is a culmination of many of the different styles which Payton has developed throughout his career. It is without doubt the most mature work that Nicholas Payton has produced to date, a lion cub who has grown up.

BIG YUYU HOT BAND

Horacio Fumero, contrabaix. David Xirgu, bateria. Albert Bover, piano. Josep Maria Farràs, trompeta.

Joan Amaro, bass. Jaume Crespí, drums. Jordi Álvarez, guitars and vocals. Llorenç Barceló,
keyboard. Josep Oliver, trombone. Jesús Diez, tenor saxophone. Pep Garau, trumpet.

The band formed at the beginning of 2006, initially as a lively blues trio: guitar, bass and drums, and despite being a young group, its members have a wide musical career and can boast of having carried out more than five hundred performances. Joan Amaro on bass along with Jaume 'Trotsky' Crespí on drums and Jordi Álvarez on vocals and guitar are the basic nucleus of Big Yuyu. They all come from the Catalonian and Majorcan blues scene and have collaborated with bands such as Big Mama, Johnny Mcuerdo, The Jay Kay Band, The Blues Devils, Victor Uris Band. The rest of the band form the cool wind section with a power and a passion which leave no member of the audience untouched. This passion they were determined to convey in their first record releases. Their repertoire is based on blues classics, deep southern roots, Chicago blues, Memphis soul, New Orleans funk ... Big Yuyu Hot Band knows how to adapt its style and personality, creating its own character in every performance.

JIMMY WEINSTEIN’S TRAVELLING SCHOOL BAND

Jimmy Weinstein, bateria i compositor. Lilli Santon, veu. Paolo Porta, saxo. Antoni Miranda, guitarra. Francesco Guaiana, guitarra. Stefano Solani, contrabaix

Jimmy Weinstein, drummer and composer, was born in Chicago in 1960. He perfected his early musical talent at Berkley College of Music in Boston. His teacher was Max Roach at Massachusetts University and he met and was influenced by Jaco Pastorius, Paul Bley and David Liebman among others. Weinstein likes to define himself as a drummer songwriter. He has recorded more than twenty albums and toured America, Europe and Japan playing his compositions. As far as the 'Travelling School Band' is concerned, it is a sextet which develops compositions using vocal and instrumental improvisation consisting of powerful melodies over 'jazz-rock'. The sextet is formed by two electric guitarists, the Italian Francesco Guaiana and the Majorcan Antoni Miranda, the tenor saxophonist Paolo Porta, who worked with Weinstein in America, the splendid voice of Lilli Santon and the double bassist, Stefano Solani, who, together with Weinstein on drums, creates a tapestry of deep 'groove' within a structured and balanced space where the soloists blend textures and lines giving a powerful emotional effect.

LET’S GET LOST
EUA. 1988. 120’. VOSE. B/n. Documental/Musical/Biogràfic. Director, productor i guió: Bruce Weber. Música: Chet Baker.  Fotografia: Jeff Preiss.
Like that villain in Batman, Chet Baker has two faces: the handsome one and the ugly one. A beauty destined for self-destruction, Baker went from being a king of cool jazz on the West Coast to nothing. His descent to hell was frightening. In the 50s he was an idol: he looked like James Dean, he was a master trumpeter and played sessions with Charlie Parker and Gerry Mulligan ... Baker was the pin-up of Californian jazz. But, alas, he had to ruin it all. A tormented soul, in three decades he would be a junkie on the streets, his life a monument to personal annihilation. This classic documentary by the renowned Bruce Weber (the skilful photographer of the Calvin Klein campaigns and the Pet Shop Boys' video Being Boring) tells the turbulent life story of the jazzman in flashbacks, starting with a broken Baker and looking back at his glorious past. Abundant interviews and selected material from the past, as well as the trumpeter who stars in the film, all make it a masterpiece. It was nominated for an Oscar for best documentary.
