Sa Pobla with its more than 11.000 inhabitants,
is today a dynamic and modern village, where tradition and modernity live
together in harmony. Land of welcome, cultural crossbreeding and open
minded, Sa Pobla has one of the largest commercial, cultural and gastronomic
proposals in the north of Mallorca, and it forms in fact a bridge between
the cosmopolitan coastline and the interior of the island, still unwilling
to show its charm. Ca’n Blau, S’Albufera i les marjals.
At Sa Pobla, s’Albufera (pond) and marsh get together in a singular and unique landscape, a few miles away from a bright blue sea. To get to Sa Pobla first we should go through s’Albufera one of
the most esteemed natural heritage of Mallorca. Land of fen, rice and
reed; fruitful land won to the water thanks to the visionary constancy
of two British engineers – Hope & Bateman-, s’Albufera
keeps the testimony of a secular fight against the elements, a fight made
of effort and sacrifice. S’Albufera, its myths, its tales, its mystery...
are an essential part of town’s history and have forged its citizens
kind. The night of January 16th.-every year-, -two forces- St. Anthony and the Devil- put face to face in a religious celebration, but funny, along with a very famous gastronomy in Mallorca.
The rest of the church as we can see it today, has been finished in 1761.
Its main façade has quite simplicity, The church has a unique nave
with lateral chapels, one of them, Our Lady of rosary was built in a square
shape with a lantern that allows the natural daylight through the windows
fall into the chapel.
The Contemporary Art Museum holds a permanent background of more than one hundred works made by Mallorcan artists and other painters who live on the island, mostly from 1970 to 1990; a period of time very intense in the evolution of contemporary Art in the isles. The Toys Museum, one of the largest in Europe in its genre exhibits an
own background of more than 3.000 toys and objects that have to do with
the childhood world. The show exhibits just a part of the whole collection,
and allows us a journey to the past just to teach us how our ancestors
used to play. This is a display of handicraft toys from different countries
as well as a display of industrial toys development from lithographed
tin toys to the synthetic “mass made” ones. Just to finish our journey, we will visit Crestatx oratory. Located in
the outskirts of Sa Pobla towards Pollensa about 2 miles away from the
centre, Crestatx is the spiritual reference of the village and it already
appears in some documents back in 1.285. it was a little hamlet built
just after the conquest of Mallorca by the catalans in the XIII century.
Today’s structure –after some restorations and improvements-
display a joint with remains of Lombard Romanesque Art. |
